The Story Behind Starlight Movie Night

When I was a kid, my mom took me to register for tee-ball at the old Harewood Mall. She didn't realize the registration fee had gone up by $20 that year. As a single mom doing her best to make ends meet, that unexpected increase was more than she had with her. She quietly turned around and walked away.

A gentleman helping with registration witnessed what had happened. Without hesitation, he stepped in and paid my registration so I could play. He didn't expect recognition. He simply wanted a kid to be able to play baseball.

I don't think he ever realized the impact that small act of kindness would have on me. It showed me what community truly looks like - that when people help one another, even a simple gesture can leave a lasting impression.

Years later, that moment is still with me. Starlight Movie Night was created with that same spirit in mind. It's our way of bringing families together, creating lasting memories, and giving back to the community that gives me so much to me.

I've never forgotten that man's kindness. Although I don't know where life took him, I hope he'd be proud to know that one small act of generosity helped inspire an event that has now brought countless families together.

Yes! Starlight Movie Night is completely free to attend. Donations to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation are appreciated but never required.
Disney•Pixar's Hoppers will be shown on our giant outdoor screen beginning at approximately 8:15 PM, just after sunset.
We recommend bringing lawn chairs or blankets so you can relax and enjoy the movie comfortably. You may also wish to bring a light sweater for later in the evening.
Starlight Movie Night will go ahead in light rain or a passing shower. Many guests simply bring an umbrella or a rain jacket, and a little drizzle often adds to the atmosphere. If severe weather makes it unsafe to proceed, we'll post updates on this website and our social media channels as early as possible.
Absolutely! You're welcome to bring your own food, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. We'll also have food and treats available by donation, with all proceeds supporting the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. As quantities are limited, we recommend eating before you arrive or bringing along any food you'd like to enjoy during the movie.
Registration for Starlight Movie Night has now reached capacity, with 1,750 guests registered. If you've already reserved your tickets, you're all set! To help us plan activities and event amenities for everyone attending, we're no longer accepting additional registrations.
We will have procedures in place to respond if someone requires assistance. Emergency services will be contacted when necessary, and we’ll update this information if dedicated first responders are confirmed for the event.
